(9 Apr 2016) The US Navy and their counterparts from 30 other nations are in Manama, Bahrain, conducting the world's largest maritime exercise. The International Mine Countermeasure Exercise (IMCMEX) spans an area of operations from the Suez Canal, through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, to the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, and into the Arabian Gulf. It is aimed at protecting the free-flow of commerce from a range of maritime threats in the region, including piracy, militant groups, and mines. The USS Firebolt (PC-10) is the tenth member of the Cyclone-class of coastal patrol boats and is currently home ported in Manama, Bahrain. The primary mission of these ships is coastal patrol and interdiction surveillance, an important aspect of littoral operations outlined in the Navy's strategy, "Forward...From the Sea". Mission tasking for forward based PC's consist of Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in the Northern Arabian Gulf (NAG), protection of Iraq's oil terminals and sea based infrastructure, as well as Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) tasking.
